Racer James Hinchcliffe Will Join Our Smoky 600Road & Track

In June, Road & Track is rolling out to the Smoky Mountains for a journey through some of America's greatest driving roads. That Smoky 600 just got even better with the addition of a special guest: six-time IndyCar winner and current IndyCar on NBC analyst James Hinchcliffe.

Hinchcliffe was a fan favorite throughout his 11-year IndyCar career, which saw him grab wins at all of a street circuit, a permanent road course, and an oval. He more famously raced for both Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and Andretti Autosport, but his career started racing for the legendary Newman/Haas Racing in their last season of IndyCar competition in 2011. A surprise run to Rookie of the Year propelled him to a long career in the series, including top ten championship finishes in both 2012 and 2013.

In 2015, Hinchcliffe was involved in one of the most harrowing crashes in IndyCar history in a session ahead of that year's Indianapolis 500. He missed the remainder of the 2015 season while recovering, but he returned in time for the start of the 2016 season. When he returned for that year's Indianapolis 500, he put together an iconic four-lap qualifying run to take pole for that year's race.

Outside of IndyCar, Hinchcliffe is a former Dancing with the Stars contestant who finished second in the 2016 season. He last ran a full IndyCar season in 2021 and has worked as one of NBC's IndyCar analysts since 2022, calling every race alongside Leigh Diffey and Townsend Bell.

The Smoky 600 is sold out, but Road & Track has more events planned throughout 2023. Our next rally is the Hudson Quattrocento, our journey through the Hudson Valley.
