Recall Roundup: BMW Recalls More Than 200,000 X3, X4, X5, X6 Sport Activity Vehicles

During the past week, four automakers issued vehicle safety recalls covering the 2006 through 2017 model years and affecting nearly 430,000 cars and SUVs. The majority of the recalled vehicles were Sport Activity Vehicles produced by BMW. Details for each safety recall are below, in alphabetical order by car brand.

  • Number of vehicles affected: 188,668

  • Date of manufacture: July 2, 2010 to April 15, 2016

  • Issue: The recall affects certain model-year 2011-2017 BMW X3 sDrive28i, X3 xDrive28i, and X3 xDrive35i vehicles manufactured July 2, 2010 to April 14, 2016; 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d vehicles manufactured March 10, 2014 to March 31, 2016; and 2015-2017 BMW X4 xDrive28i, X4 xDrive35i, and X4 xDrive M40i vehicles manufactured March 3, 2014 to April 15, 2016. The affected vehicles have lower anchor bars for securing child restraint seats that may become damaged when using the European-ISOFIX-type, rigid-style connector child restraint system. Damaged lower anchor bars may increase the child's risk of injury in the event of a crash.

  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will weld a reinforcing bracket to the lower anchor bars and the vehicle body free of charge.

  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin on July 12, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

2011 BMW X6, X6 M, X6 Active Hybrid

  • Number of vehicles affected: 21,493

  • Date of manufacture: April 7, 2010 to November 17, 2010

  • Issue: Certain 2011 BMW X5 xDrive 35i, X5 xDrive50i, X5 M, X6 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive50i, X6 M, X5 xDrive35d, and X6 Active Hybrid vehicles have a front driveshaft universal joint that may not seal out water and debris from getting in and damaging the joint, which could lead to its failure. If the front universal joint fails, the front wheels would not be driven, affecting vehicle traction. Additionally, continued driving of the vehicle with a broken front universal joint may damage other components. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.

  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front driveshaft free of charge.

  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin on July 1, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

  • Date of manufacture: Recall affects vehicles from the 2013-2016 model years

  • Issue: Affected vehicles are equipped with a Bring Your Own Media radio, which may fail to provide an audible warning chime when the driver fails to fasten their seat belt or leaves the key in the ignition.

  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the radio software free of charge.

  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

2006-2012 Kia Sedona

  • Number of vehicles affected: 97,884

  • Date of manufacture: June 15, 2005 to August 14, 2012

  • Issue: The front lower control arms may break due to corrosion from salt water exposure such as from road salt use. A broken control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

  • Remedy: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front lower control arms on 2006-2007 models. Sedona vans from the 2008-2012 model years will either have their front lower control arms replaced or additional anti-corrosion coating will be applied. These repairs will be performed free of charge to the vehicle owner.

  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin on July 25, 2016. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542.

  • Date of manufacture: Recall affects 2015 and 2016 model years

  • Issue: Affected vehicles include model-year 2016 Toyota Camry and Highlander, and 2015-2016 Toyota Tundra, Scion FR-S, and tC. The load-carrying capacity modification label may not reflect the correct added weight of the installed accessories. An incorrect label may lead an owner to overload the vehicle.

  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners and provide to them free of charge a corrected label for placement over the inaccurate label.

  • Timing: The recall will begin on July 14, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-866-405-4226.
