Yahoo Autos Red Bull Global Rallycross Might Be Dead
Red Bull Global Rallycross (GRC) might be dead. New York race track Lancaster National Speedway announced today that its GRC event, originally set for June 9th and 10th, is cancelled because the series is ceasing operations for the 2018 season. And as Jalopnik points out, a schedule for the rest of the 2018 GRC season appears to have been removed from the series website.
So far, Red Bull GRC hasn't made an official statement regarding its future, but we've reached out to a series spokesperson for more information. Apparently, though, the future for GRC wasn't looking bright before Lancaster National Speedway's announcement today.
IMG, the organizers of the FIA World Rallycross Championship, announced last year that the series would make its US debut at the Circuit of the Americas in September 2018. On top of that, IMG recently announced a new series called Americas Rallycross (ARX), which will debut with a four-round season this year. ARX has already attracted big-name teams like Andretti Autosport, Subaru Rally Team USA, and Ken Block's Hoonigan away from GRC.
Red Bull GRC got rid of its top-level Supercars class this year in favor of a new Gold class that uses the series' spec Lites cars. That move left a lot of teams without a place to race their quickest machines.
The Detroit News reported yesterday that the state of Michigan has threatened to take legal action against Red Bull GRC over an unpaid fee. GRC reportedly never paid a $76,000 user fee to hold a 2015 event at Detroit's Belle Isle, a state park. Jalopnik also reports that the GRC only paid Connecticut's Thompson Speedway $7000 of $36,000 owed for an event held at the track last year.
