Remembering Champ Car, 10 Years After its Demise

The Champ Car series came to an abrupt end at the Long Beach Grand Prix in 2008. Team owners, tired of pouring money into the championship, opted to merge with the IndyCar Series-the artist formerly known as the Indy Racing League-and with a contractual obligation to satisfy at Long Beach, Champ Car turned up to hold its grand finale with a single-race farewell.

Bound to a similar obligation in Japan, IndyCar held a race on the same weekend half a world away that was won by Danica Patrick, who was flown to Long Beach and heralded for her achievement as the Champ Car drivers were set to battle.

On the 10th anniversary of Champ Car's farewell, the odd collision of series and races made for a perfect conversation with four of the drivers who featured in Long Beach.

Directed by Travis Long and produced by myself, time spent with IndyCar champion Will Power, perennial contender Oriol Servia, CART champ Jimmy Vasser-who owned the cars driven by Power and Servia-and Champ Car champ Paul Tracy, was full of laughs and insights as the foursome reflected on a series and open-wheel formula that is still missed today.
