This Retro Review Reminds Us How Hot the 1997 Plymouth Prowler Was

From Road & Track

By the late 1990s, Plymouth hadn't had a brand-exclusive car since the 1969 Barracuda. So when it was announced that the 1993 Prowler concept car would head to production, it was big news. Its retro styling looked even more wild in 1997 than it does today, and that's saying something.

The Prowler was also a testbed for the hot new construction material of the day-aluminum. When we interviewed former Chrysler design head Tom Gale, he said the Prowler "was a great way to kind of force us to take a look at aluminum stamping, aluminum forming, extrusions, welding, and combining that with composite materials. Prowler was really more about that than it was the car itself."

Unfortunately, despite its advanced construction, neither the public nor the press took kindly to the Prowler's V6 engine and four-speed automatic transmission. 60 mph took a full seven seconds, but more importantly, the Prowler looks like a car that should offer a V8 and a manual. Plus, it cost $39,000 ($58,600 in today's dollars).

But as Motorweek's John Davis explains in the video below, that didn't stop the Prowler from getting looks. Far from it. In fact, the Plymouth Prowler might have commanded a little too much attention.
