For many years, viewers of The Real Housewives of New Jersey have been used to cast member Dolores Catania‘s family dynamic being a certain way. She remained close to Frank Catania after their divorce as they continued living under the same roof with their two children, regardless of any other romantic relationships they were also in. Ever since Dolores started dating Paul “Paulie” Connell, though, that dynamic has shifted a bit.

As fans have seen on the show, Frank has been expressing his frustrations with newly formed boundaries that Dolores has erected since her romance began. At her boyfriend’s insistence, she began going to him with any problems or issues or calls for advice instead of her ex-husband. While it’s nothing out of the ordinary for a romantic relationship, it did represent a change for the Catanias, and it’s one they’re still figuring out.

For the latest episode of In The Know by Yahoo’s pop culture interview series, We Should Talk, Dolores opened up about the situation with Paul and Frank, what it’s been like watching that back on TV and the hope she has for them to create a slightly new normal. She also discussed her ability to play the middle on the RHONJ cast as someone who is friends with most of her co-stars, reflected on her feud with Jennifer Aydin and shared her thoughts on Melissa Gorga and Teresa Giudice’s falling-out, which is “nastier” and “uglier” than ever.

“There’s so much hurt going on here, and there’s so much [happening] behind the scenes,” Dolores told In The Know. “Now it’s coming to the point where it hasn’t been easy amongst the women for them not to feel some type of way about me and me not jumping on either side. Not now or not ever do I let somebody else dictate how I handle things. It’s never been easy to not pick a side because of what people say to me. And, to be honest, I don’t really care what someone thinks or what someone says. That’s how I’m about to maintain it, because I don’t care what somebody on the outside is saying. Like, ‘Oh, how could you not turn on her?’ I’m no one’s soldier, and I have my own mind. I don’t agree with what people do to each other.”
