High tide flooding occurs twice as often along the nation’s Atlantic Coast as it did 22 years ago and federal officials expect the rising water to grow worse in communities around the nation. They warn water levels are “nearing the brim.”
A Climate Central study found higher tides could flood $34 billion worth of real estate in just 30 years. Another study found Greenland’s melting ice sheet, which experienced a record melt event in September 2022, could send seas nearly a foot higher even if the world immediately stopped burning fossil fuels.
