NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Preece was released from a hospital near the Daytona International Speedway earlier this morning. Preece stayed overnight at the hospital after a nightmarish crash during yesterday's race at Daytona that saw him roll through the grass continuously for eight seconds.

That word comes from a social media post by Preece's Stewart-Haas Racing team. According to the team, Preece stayed at Halifax Health Medical Center overnight but was "awake, alert, and mobile" while "communicating with family and friends." No further update has been provided about any potential injuries Preece may have sustained or whether or not he will be available to drive in next weekend's Cup Series race at Darlington.

In another post last night, Preece said that "if you want to be a race car driver, you better be tough." In typical NASCAR fashion, he also shouted out both Ford and his sponsor.

Preece, who needed to win yesterday's race to advance into the NASCAR playoffs, was fighting back toward the lead pack when the crash began. He was spun from the outside lane by an errant bump draft, sliding sideways through grass and uneven pavement until his car began to blow over from air gathering beneath the car's floor. That sent it rolling backwards while sliding sideways, then an impact with the roof suddenly forced the car into a series of barrel rolls in the opposite direction. Preece was able to exit the car after all the rolling and was taken to the hospital shortly after the crash.
