Earning high marks from both NHTSA and IIHS, the A5 Sportback appears to be a trustworthy choice for those concerned with safety. Audi offers a wide range of active safety features, but some are only available on the most expensive Prestige model.

Crash-Test Results

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the nonprofit, independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluate vehicles for crashworthiness in the United States. NHTSA assigns cars an overall rating out of five stars. IIHS uses a different set of tests, grades cars on a scale of Good to Poor, and awards the vehicles that perform best across its tests with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors, the latter of which requires that the subject’s automated forward-collision-braking system performs well.

Airbags, Child Seats, and Spare Tire Location

The A5 Sportback’s rear doors have narrow openings that make it difficult to maneuver a child seat inside, but doing so is easier than in the A5 coupe or convertible. LATCH anchor points are easy to find but are inconveniently located under plastic covers that must first be removed. Audi also offers optional rear-seat side-impact airbags for $350 on all A5 Sportback models.

Active Safety Features

Audi offers automated emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and pedestrian detection as standard across the A5 Sportback lineup. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the mid-level Premium Plus, as is a feature that monitors vehicles approaching from behind to help warn the driver of potential rear-end collisions. Front and rear parking sensors are standard on the Prestige model, and for $1800 buyers can select the Driver Assistance package, which adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beam headlamps, and traffic-sign recognition.
