The Audi sedan did well in its crash tests, and the A3 comes standard with some collision-avoidance technologies, while other active safety is available. The A3 cabriolet has not been crash-tested by either U.S. ratings agency.

What’s New for 2018?

Due to changes in IIHS’s testing regimen, the A3 has been downgraded to Top Safety Pick from Top Safety Pick+ since it has not yet undergone the new passenger-side small-overlap crash test. Elsewhere, blind-spot monitoring is now offered as standard equipment on the midrange Premium Plus. It was formerly standard only on top-spec Prestige models.

Crash Test Results

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the nonprofit, independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluate vehicles for crashworthiness in the United States. NHTSA assigns cars an overall rating out of five stars. IIHS uses a different set of tests, grades cars on a scale of Good to Poor, and awards the vehicles that perform best across its tests with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors, the latter of which requires that the subject’s automated forward-collision-braking system performs well. The A3 sedan’s five-star rating from NHTSA and Top Safety Pick+ designation from IIHS are good recommendations.

Airbags, Child Seats, and Spare Tire Location

The A3’s compact rear seat means that front-seat passengers may feel packed in if there’s an infant seat directly behind them. Installation of the seat itself is relatively easy, although the plastic LATCH anchor covers are just begging to be tossed out the window by a screaming toddler.

Active Safety Features

Audi has made forward-collision warning and partial automated emergency braking standard in every A3. The system won’t bring the car to a full stop, but it primes the brakes for emergency braking and begins brake application to mitigate collisions if necessary.
