Safety and Driver Assistance Rating:

*Due to lack of NHTSA and IIHS crash testing.

Volvo offers plenty of active-safety kit as standard, including automated emergency braking; more advanced features including a semi-autonomous driving mode are optional. Neither NHTSA nor IIHS have completed testing of the XC40, so we are unable to provide a rating in this category.

Crash Test Results

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the nonprofit, independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluate vehicles for crashworthiness in the United States. NHTSA assigns cars an overall rating out of five stars. IIHS uses a different set of tests, grades cars on a scale of Good to Poor, and awards the vehicles that perform best across its tests with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors, the latter of which requires that the subject’s automated forward-collision-braking system performs well.

Airbags, Child Seats, and Spare Tire Location

We have few complaints about the process of installing our rear-facing child seat in the XC40. LATCH anchors are easy to access, the flat rear-seat bottoms make it easy to install the base as level as possible, and door openings are just wide enough to allow for unimpeded access.

Active-Safety Features

Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist with lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlamps, a driver-attention monitor, and traffic-sign detection are all offered as standard equipment across the XC40 lineup. A self-parking feature, front and rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert can be added to any XC40 for $1100 by way of the Vision package; adaptive cruise control with a semi-autonomous driving mode that Volvo calls Pilot Assist is a part of the Premium package ($1400 on Momentum trims, $900 on R-Design and Inscription models).
