Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has tested the XF Sportbrake, so we are unable to rate it here. It does, however, have a suite of crash-prevention tech available either as standard or optional.

Crash Test Results

The NHTSA and the nonprofit, independent IIHS evaluate vehicles for crashworthiness in the United States. NHTSA assigns cars an overall rating out of five stars. IIHS uses a different set of tests, grades cars on a scale of Good to Poor, and awards the vehicles that perform best across its tests with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors, the latter of which requires that the subject’s automated forward-collision-braking system performs well.

Airbags, Child Seats, and Spare Tire Location

Fitting a child seat into the XF Sportbrake is relatively simple. The LATCH anchors are easy to access but require removing plastic pieces that could easily be lost if not properly stowed. The base of the child seat did not level out on its own, which means parents will need some sort of towel or shim to ensure proper safety. The driver and front passenger do not need to move up significantly in order to accommodate the rear-facing child seat. However, installation might take a little maneuvering due to a tight rear-door opening.

Active Safety Features

On a car that already starts at more than $70,000, any optional items that add thousands of dollars more to the price are difficult to justify. But adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, and active parking assist are available in the $3495 Driver Assistance package.
