Safety and Driver Assistance
Safety and Driver Assistance Rating:
*Due to lack of NHTSA and IIHS crash testing.
We can’t yet score the Kona here because neither IIHS nor NHTSA have released crash-test ratings. Hyundai does offer plenty of active-safety features; unfortunately, most are linked to the top-spec Ultimate trim.
Crash Test Results
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the nonprofit, independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluate vehicles for crashworthiness in the United States. NHTSA assigns cars an overall rating out of five stars. IIHS uses a different set of tests, grades cars on a scale of Good to Poor, and awards the vehicles that perform best across its tests with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors, the latter of which requires that the subject’s automated forward-collision-braking system performs well.

Airbags, Child Seats, and Spare Tire Location
We had no trouble installing the base for our rear-facing infant carrier thanks to clearly labeled LATCH anchors and a relatively flat rear-seat cushion. Maneuvering the carrier into the Kona is another story: Rear-door openings are narrow, and front-seat occupants will have to scoot forward to accommodate the bulky child seat.
Active-Safety Features
Buyers searching for popular active-safety features will find them on the Kona, but many are only available on the top-dog Ultimate trim or, strangely enough, on the middle-level SEL as part of the $1500 Tech package. Those features in the Tech package and on the Ultimate trim include forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a driver-attention monitor. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on SEL, Limited, and Ultimate trims, but automatic high-beam headlamps and rear parking sensors are exclusive to the Ultimate trim. Adaptive cruise control is not offered on any Kona model.
