The Outlander is available with a host of high-tech assists that include automated emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. It also earned excellent crash-test results from the testing agencies. Unfortunately, all active-safety features cost extra, and IIHS and NHTSA scores don’t apply to every model.

Crash Test Results

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the nonprofit, independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluate vehicles for crashworthiness in the United States. NHTSA assigns cars an overall rating out of five stars. IIHS uses a different set of tests, grades cars on a scale of Good to Poor, and awards the vehicles that perform best across its tests with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors, the latter of which requires that the subject’s automated forward-collision-braking system performs well.

While the standard Outlander was named an IIHS Top Safety Pick, the agency has not fully tested the plug-in hybrid. Likewise, the NHTSA test results were not consistent across the lineup.

Installing a rear-facing child seat in the Outlander’s second row was painless, with accessible LATCH anchors and a level seat surface. However, there are no LATCH points in the third row.

Active-Safety Features

Unlike many competitors, the Outlander does not include any standard active-safety features. Mitsubishi also rations these options among models, with the top tech reserved for the SEL and GT trims. This includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beams, automated emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning. The optional blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard starting on the mid-level SEL, but below that only front and rear parking sensors are available.
