The Chevy Volt performed extremely well in its crash tests and offers plenty of active-safety technology. Unfortunately, none of the tech is standard, so drivers who want blind-spot monitoring or adaptive cruise control will need to shell out extra cash for it.

What's New for 2019?

Unfortunately, only the top-tier Premier model comes standard with driver assists such as adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, automatic high-beams, and self-parking assist. The Volt also adds a high-definition backup camera and a tire-fill system that sounds the horn when you achieve the correct pressure when putting air in the tires. Models with adaptive cruise control now also include regular non-adaptive cruise control, and the pedestrian-detection alert now uses both front and rear speakers for the system's audible warning. While the 2019 Volt scored a five-star NHTSA rating, it has not yet been tested by the IIHS. However, it was named a Top Safety Pick for 2018.

Crash-Test Results

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the nonprofit, independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluate vehicles for crashworthiness in the United States. NHTSA assigns cars an overall rating out of five stars. IIHS uses a different set of tests, grades cars on a scale of Good to Poor, and awards the vehicles that perform best across its tests with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors, the latter of which requires that the subject's automated forward-collision-braking system performs well.
