From Car and Driver

  • The founder of the Discovery Channel built an 8700-acre estate in Colorado featuring a car museum, a resort, and a stately main house, and now the whole thing is up for sale.

  • LIV Sotheby's in Denver has listed the property at an asking price of $279 million.

  • Sadly, the 50-car collection in the Gateway Auto Museum is not part of the deal.

We promise this isn't an Onion takeover of our website-there really is an 8700-acre Colorado estate built by John Hendricks, the founder of the Discovery Channel, listed for sale. The property not only includes a 22,000-square-foot "main house," but also a fully functioning resort as well as a car museum. Previously listed separately, these disparate elements (and the entire acreage) are now being offered together for the hot price of $279 million by LIV Sotheby's in Denver.

There is some bad news: The Gateway Auto Museum, if that's what you're interested in, only comes with two cars. Like your buddy's late-night parties, this is a BYOCC-Bring Your Own Classic Cars-kind of situation. The seller is throwing in a 1929 Duesenberg and a 1906 Cadillac with the sale, but the rest of his 50-plus-car private collection is going, presumably with the washer and dryer and the TVs. The house also comes with what is described as a "five-plus-car garage," so if your toys don't fit in the museum, you have options.

And hey, at least the guy is leaving most of the furniture in the main house, and the buildings (as opposed to the resort elsewhere on the property) are said to be temperature regulated using geothermal heating and cooling, which might save you a buck or two in utilities expenses for the 14 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms.

If you need to pinch a few more pennies to be able to swing this multimillion-dollar property and its two helipads, infinity pool, and more, you'll be glad to know that it's served by the Gateway elementary, middle, and high schools, which, in keeping with Mesa Couny School District 51 rules, provide bus pickup and drop-off for students living more than two miles away. The elementary school is just over three miles from the Gateway Canyons Ranch and Resort, so you might be able to save some gas by the skin of your ZIP code by not schlepping little ones to and fro. So, who's in? Best offer takes it.
