Yahoo Autos Sebastian Vettel Wants to Bring Howling V12s Back to F1
Now that Liberty Media has begun its purchase of Formula 1, the drivers have begun speaking out about what changes they'd like to see, and Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel is perhaps the most outspoken. Among other changes, he says he'd like to drop F1's current hybrid V6 powertrains for some old-school goodness.
"If you ask me what I would like to drive, I would like double the amount of cylinders in the car and take off a lot of the complicated electric equipment," Vettel told the AFP.
But V12s aren't the only changes Vettel wants to see. He'd also like the cars to be faster and more exciting. Force India's Sergio Perez agreed, adding that he thinks fans want the races to be closer, as well.
"I would love to see Formula One a lot closer, giving the midfield teams the opportunity to be capable of winning a race, fighting for titles," said Pereez. "I think that would be just something great for the fans to see-one race Williams on top, another race another team."
Renault driver Jolyon Palmer expressed a similar sentiment, arguing that it would improve fan involvement and make the sport more interesting if more than a couple drivers had a chance of winning any given race.
Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, on the other hand, has different priorities. What he wants are better post-race parties, and he believes Saturday races would help with that.
"I'd like a Saturday race as opposed to Sunday, just so we can plan a bigger night on Saturday. That would be good fun," he told reporters.
With current F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone set to attend this weekend's race with the new chairman Chase Carey, there's a chance these drivers will get to make their requests in person. Hopefully Carey listens, especially to the part about bringing back the V12s.
We sure do miss the sound of those screaming V12s.
