  • The 2020 Cadillac CT5 mid-size sedan is being revealed online with trendy autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) content, designed to trigger viewers' senses.

  • The first of four videos in Cadillac's first "digital reveal" features black-and-white camouflage created by visual artist Darel Carey.

Reinvention is a complex business, and Cadillac is using a variety of tactics to reinvigorate the brand and connect with customers who have lived the majority of their adult lives in the digital age. Its latest approach revolves around-surprise!-the internet, specifically the Cadillac YouTube channel, where the new 2020 Cadillac CT5 sedan will first meet the public.

The CT5 fills the sedan-size hole in the Cadillac lineup created by the recent departure of the CTS (and ATS) sedan and continues Cadillac's ongoing effort to unseat buyers from their perches in the Audi A4, BMW 3-series, and Mercedes-Benz C-class. The new model is built on the latest evolution of the Alpha architecture that underpinned the outgoing CTS, which was discontinued at the end of the 2018 model year; and speaking of evolution, we expect the CT5 to continue Cadillac's emphasis on building sedans with sharp and refined chassis characteristics. The standard engine will be a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, and a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 with "unique sound calibrations" will be optional. Although Cadillac hasn't yet elaborated, we expect both engines to be closely related in specification to those in the 2019 CT6. Both are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission in place of the CTS's eight-speed box.

The design appears to adhere closely to the current Cadillac design ethos with a touch of Teutonic flair in the C-pillar and trunklid-at least from what we can see so far. A slightly lower beltline and larger glass areas contribute to that impression. While we'll need to wait until we see it on the podium in New York to make any final judgment, we had been hoping its design would hew closer to that of the Escala concept Cadillac showed at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in 2016.

Intended to be more than the usual product-launch-video song and dance, the Sensual Symphony series of online videos employs the currently trendy autonomous sensory meridian response, or ASMR, which emphasizes specific sounds designed to trigger a physical response in the viewer. In addition to highlighting the note of the available twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine and audio from its Bose audio system, the videos also focus in with whisperlike audio as the car's custom black-and-white camouflage wrap is slowly peeled away.

The camouflage wrap was designed by artist Darel Carey, who specializes in works intended to distort spatial perception. Cadillac says the imagery adds to the sensory interaction to help trigger ASMR sensations.

Cadillac president Steve Carlisle has told C/D that the brand is not giving up on sedans, and the new CT5 underscores this commitment, as does the fact that there are two additional new sedans waiting in the wings. But that's in the future. Right now, we've got three more videos to endure before we see the new Cadillac CT5 sedan on the stand in New York.
