Skoda's CEO Promises an "Awesome" Electric Car In 2020
Škoda's big news for 2016 was an affordable 7-seat SUV we got to know as the Kodiaq, just before Volkswagen announced its American equivalent, the new VW Atlas. But with the parent company spending so much on its upcoming electric lineup, the Czech are also getting a chance to show what they can do with the technology.
Škoda's CEO Bernhard Maier told Autocar that while they don't intend to be first to market, turning their best-selling flagship Superb sedan into a plug-in hybrid for 2019 makes perfect sense, especially since they can use the Volkswagen Passat GTE's drivetrain to make it happen. By that time, rising volumes will bring the costs down, which will let Škoda put the right price on the windshield.
The plug-in hybrid Superb will be followed by an electrified Kodiaq using the same drivetrain. But what's even better is that Škoda is also preparing to launch a brand new electric car in 2020. We don't know much about it yet, except that Maier promises "it will be awesome." So be it!
