There's a big gap between the entry-level Mercedes CLA and GLA and their AMG 45 variants - a 167-hp gap, to be specific. AMG intends to fill that span, adding a middle AMG-badged CLA/GLA to go between the base model and the AMG 45.

Auto Express reports that AMG boss Tobias Moers has confirmed new, less-powerful AMG variants of the CLA, GLA and non-US-market A-Class to fit under the hardcore AMG 45 models. It's a continuation of the strategy seen elsewhere in the Mercedes lineup - for example, how the Mercedes-AMG C43 sits below the crazy V8-powered C63.

Moers declined to comment on how much horsepower these new, lesser models would make, but we do know the next CLA45 and GLA45 promise up to 400 horses. Our best guess is that these cars will produce around 300 hp, lining them up with the VW Golf R and the Audi S3.

Auto Express says that a new A-Class, based on a concept shown in Shanghai last month, will hit production sometime next year. The CLA and GLA ride on the same platform as the A-Class, so presumably updates to these models will follow not too long after.

While it's hard to complain about more performance-oriented Mercedes models, all of these lower-powered AMGs make us worry about brand dilution. Considering AMG is on track to sell over 100,000 cars this year, we doubt the people in Affalterbach care.
