Someone Left A Loaded 9mm Gun In A Rental Car

A woman in Virginia is pretty upset after a loaded 9mm handgun was found in the seat pocket of her rental car. Considering she has a 4-year-old and the weapon was right next to where she sits, the story could have turned out far differently.

That woman, who lives in Roanoke, Virginia received a call from Enterprise and was informed the rental car she had picked up the day before possibly had a loaded gun in it. A police officer showed up and immediately found it with “a fully loaded clip” because the handgun was an M1 Garand. That’s a joke, everyone. It had a fully loaded magazine, obviously.

For some people this might be a doomsday type scenario. We don’t know what kind of handgun it was, only that is was a 9mm, but most have a safety that would’ve likely prevented a 4-year-old from firing it. Probably. Still, we wouldn’t leave a small child with access to a firearm for good reason – it’s just a bad and irresponsible thing to do.

What’s most interesting about KFVS’ coverage of this story is that no reason was supplied by police or Enterprise about why the gun was left in the car. The woman wants answers and we get why, but at the same time we’re not sure she legally can demand any.

Responible gun owners don’t just stash a loaded firearm in a car and then forget about it, especially one that’s a rental. We’re not saying this handgun was used in the commission of a crime. Most likely it was forgotten by someone who wasn’t knocking off 7-Elevens.

The real question is why Enterprise didn’t thoroughly check the car before renting it out to someone else? After all, a person could leave narcotics, knives, or any number of other dangerous items in a rental. They could even leave evidence from a crime in the trunk, then when the next person is pulled over by police they have to explain that.
