GM's G-Body platform produced two of the coolest American cars of the 1980s–the Chevrolet El Camino and the Buick Grand National. Someone took the best halves of each–the El Camino's bed, and the Buick's front end and turbocharged V6–and combined them to create what is inarguably a masterpiece. The best part about it is that it's yours for just $55,000.
Ok, so $55,000 sounds like a lot for an '80s Buick, but don't forget about the GNX that sold for $165,000 at auction last year. In this context, this Grand Camino a genuine bargain. It's certainly more special than an old GNX, thanks to some choice modifications that go beyond the bodywork.
The mechanical highlight is a 4.1-liter turbocharged Buick Motorsports Stage II motor that generates a claimed 500 horsepower at the rear wheels. The seller thinks it can run low-10-second quarter-miles and with some more work, it could break into single digits. That's much healthier than a stock GNX's 300 horsepower.
According to the seller, $95,000 has been sunk into this car not including labor. In addition to the bodywork and engine, the Grand Camino has received a healthy amount of drivetrain and suspension upgrades. The interior is mostly stock Grand National, with some El Camino components found throughout.
In 2006, the car was featured in Super Chevy magazine, but that was before it received its engine swap.
We love a good GNX, but honestly we'd rather have this. Custom cars don't get much cooler.
