Cutting weight out of a car pays dividends in performance, ride/handling, and fuel economy. It's why automotive engineers try to shave a gram wherever they can. Of course, saving weight often means skipping out on key features, and some enthusiast-car automakers let the customers chose between cutting pounds or equipment. Like Dodge, which offers a Lightweight Performance Package for its Durango SRT 392 and Hellcat.

With the 392 weighing in at 5378 pounds and the Hellcat weighing 5710 pounds, the Durango SRT is already quite lithe, but when you're chasing tenths, every pound counts. The Lightweight Performance Package is a simple one—it gets rid of the third row of seating standard on all Durangos. We've reached out to Dodge to find out the amount of weight deleting the third row saves and we'll update this post when we hear back. And the best part? It's a no-cost option. To us, it's a no-brainer—tick that box.

Obviously, this is all quite humorous. A Durango SRT is one of the heaviest performance cars out there, and taking out the rear seats doesn't change that fact. Dodge, of course, knows this. It's just having fun with no-cost options here, as it did with the standard passenger-seat delete with the Challenger SRT Demon. And really, this is far less silly than the Lightweight Sport Package that Porsche offers for the Cayenne Coupe, which shaves only up to 48 pounds and costs between $14,440 and $17,930.

The Durango SRT 392 and Hellcat are delightfully absurd, so it makes perfect sense to offer a "Lightweight Sport Package."
