A 24-hour race isn't just brutal for drivers and crews-a good photographer will work hard to capture the whole thing. That becomes obvious in this short documentary from motorsports photographer and friend-of-the-site Jamey Price. Price takes us behind the scenes shooting the Spa 24 Hours, giving us a glimpse of what it takes to shoot endurance racing.
Shooting any race is a very physical job, with all the heavy equipment you need to carry from corner to corner. That's especially the case at Spa Francorchamps, which is a long circuit with big elevation changes. Price walks miles during the course of the 24-hour race, searching for different vantage points throughout the circuit.
That'd be hard enough for a six-hour race, but in a 24-hour race, you're fighting sleep deprivation too. Price snags a 30-minute nap in the morning, but he says this is a rare occurrence.
But for all the trouble, shooting a day-long race like this is worth it. You get all sorts of light and opportunities to capture different scenes as the race unfolds. Just make sure you're in good shape first.
