US FAA opens probe into Boeing 787 inspections
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The Federal Aviation Administration said on Monday it has opened an investigation into the Boeing 787 Dreamliner after the planemaker said some employees had committed "misconduct" by claiming some tests had been completed. The FAA said it is investigating whether Boeing completed the inspections to confirm adequate bonding and grounding where the wings join the fuselage on certain 787 Dreamliner airplanes "and whether company employees may have falsified aircraft records." The agency said "at the same time, Boeing is reinspecting all 787 airplanes still within the production system and must also create a plan to address the in-service fleet."

NEW DELHI (Reuters) -Global petrol demand growth could halve in 2024, squeezing second-half refinery margins, analysts said, driven by a shift to electric cars in China and the United States and a return to normal consumption after last year's bounce following COVID-19. In the lowest growth since 2020, demand is likely to rise 340,000 barrels per day (bpd), to stand at 26.5 million bpd this year, says consultancy Wood Mackenzie, down from growth of 700,000 bpd last year, as China nears the point of peak transport fuel demand and the U.S. has surpassed it. "Penetration of electric vehicles has been increasing in U.S. and China," said Woodmac analyst Sushant Gupta.

A federal appeals court has upheld a 2021 ruling that NBA star Zion Williamson's contract with a marketing agent was void because the agent was not licensed in North Carolina when the two entered an agreement in 2019. Florida-based agent Gina Ford had sought $100 million from Williamson, claiming the former Duke All-American improperly broke an agreement she had to represent him in endorsement deals. A federal judge in North Carolina found that Ford was not a licensed agent in that state at the time she entered an agreement with Williamson and that their contract did not comply with key requirements outlined by the state’s sports agent law.

Chinese tariffs could leave cognac makers with too much brandy
High Chinese tariffs on EU brandy would leave French companies with vast amounts of cognac that could be hard to sell elsewhere, according to Reuters' calculations, analysts, and investors who fear firms could be forced to discount. China opened an anti-dumping investigation into brandy imported from the European Union in January, sparking fears cognac could suffer a similar blow to that taken by Australian wine when China introduced tariffs of up to 218.4%. Australian wine exports to China, worth $1.1 billion in 2019, were almost completely wiped out by high tariffs.

Australia's Qantas agrees to $79 million penalty
STORY: Australian airline Qantas Airways said on Monday it had agreed to pay a penalty worth $79 million U.S. dollars to settle a lawsuit. The claim accused the airline giant of illegally selling thousands of tickets for flights that had already been cancelled. The fine is the largest ever faced by an Australian airline.As part of the settlement with Australia's consumer commission, the company will split $13 million between more than 86,000 customers who booked tickets on the so-called "ghost flights" and pay a $66 million fine instead of defending the lawsuit that it had previously vowed to fight.The penalty is subject to the approval of the Federal Court of Australia.CEO Vanessa Hudson said in a statement that, QUOTE, "we recognize Qantas let down customers and fell short of our own standards," CEO Vanessa Hudson said in a statement."Qantas was sued last August by the consumer commission, which alleged that in some cases the airlines flights were on sale for weeks after they’d been cancelled. The company had argued that it faced similar challenges to airlines around the world, but the commission said its actions broke consumer law. Qantas is also still waiting to learn how much it must pay nearly 1,700 ground handling staff it sacked in 2020 after a court found the job cuts were illegal since they were intended to stop industrial action.
