Tesla's Next Version of Autopilot Will Reportedly Have a Lot of New Hardware

From Road & Track

Tesla and its semi-autonomous driving 'Autopilot' system have been a subject of controversy lately. With the death of Joshua Brown at the wheel of a self-piloted Tesla in May, people are as unsure as ever when it comes to autonomous cars. Tesla, despite the drama, continues to invest in its system, and plans on launching an upgraded version very soon.

Autopilot 2.0, as everyone is calling it, is said to be a vast improvement on the existing software Tesla uses. The automaker has reportedly started to add additional camera and sensor housings to its current production vehicles, making them upgrade-ready once the new version arrives. Tesla hasn't said exactly what the new software is capable of, but its CEO, Elon Musk, in the company's most recent earnings call, did say that "what [they've] got will blow people's minds."

After numerous reports of alleged Autopilot-caused crashes, it's clear Tesla wants to make a big improvement on its extremely popular software. Giving it more sensors and feedback should be a great way to make its system more of an actual feature rather than a complex gimmick.
