There's More Evidence that BMW Will Bring Back the 8-Series

From Road & Track

If you're a fan of big luxury coupes, then we have great news. It looks like BMW really does plan to bring back the 8-Series, finally giving it a true competitor for the S-Class Coupe. That's the word according to Automotive News, at least.

The latest report cites Germany's Automobilwoche, one of Automotive News's sister publications. Reportedly, the new 8 Series will slot between the 7 Series and the Rolls-Royce Wraith and will start north of $150,000. Sources claim the coupe version will arrive in late 2018, with a convertible coming a year later. An optional V12 and a high-performance M version are also supposedly under consideration, but neither has been confirmed yet.

Automobilwoche's sources also said the 6 Series probably won't be replaced. Interestingly, they said the controversial 5 Series GT may actually get the 6 Series name. That would certainly be an odd move, but with the new Z5 coming, we can't imagine the 6 Series will be missed.

Other than the part about the 5 Series GT getting renamed, we've heard this all before. What's new is that it's being reported by Automotive News, a generally reliable outlet that doesn't report many rumors. Seeing it reported there makes us much more likely to believe it's actually happening.

Obviously, this is far from an official confirmation. But if a new 8 Series really is happening, hopefully BMW won't make us wait very long to see it.
