• Measuring owner satisfaction with the quality of new vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership, the annual J.D. Power Initial Quality Study^SM (IQS) is a benchmark of new-vehicle quality. This year, the study’s 30th, more than 80,000 new-vehicle owners responded, reporting design- and defect-related problems.
  
  Derived from this research, Power Circle Ratings (PCRs) serve as visual summaries of the study’s overall findings. Consumers can use the PCRs while researching and shopping for their next new vehicle.
  
  This buyer’s guide highlights the top-rated trucks for 2016 in terms of initial quality. Each model receives a Power Circle Rating of 4 or 5 out of a possible 5 for initial quality during the first 90 days of ownership.

• 2016 Chevrolet Silverado HD

  Chevrolet makes several changes to its lineup of Silverado heavy-duty pickup trucks for 2016. A new infotainment system debuts with expanded capabilities and Digital Steering Assist is designed to improve driving dynamics whether the bed is loaded or full, or if the truck is towing something or not. A Gooseneck/Fifth-Wheel Trailering option package is also new, and tow ratings adhere to SAE J2807 standards for 2016.
  
  The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado HD receives an initial quality Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5 and is the award recipient in the Large Heavy Duty Pickup segment.

  A fresh face and an available new 8-speed automatic transmission are the headliners as far as changes to the Silverado 1500 (or LD) go, but the automaker also installs new infotainment systems and expands the list of convenience upgrades for the 2016 model year.
  
  The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 receives an initial quality Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5 and is the award recipient in the Large Light Duty Pickup segment.

• 2016 Ford F-Series Super Duty

  Few changes are made to Ford’s lineup of heavy-duty haulers as the company prepares to unleash an onslaught of redesigned 2017 Super Duty models. In the meantime, dealers will be making offers on the outgoing F-250, F-350, and F-450 models. Given their performance in the Initial Quality Study, there are bargains to be had on quality trucks.

• 2016 GMC Canyon

  General Motors reinvigorated the midsize pickup segment in 2015 when it introduced the GMC Canyon (and its corporate twin, the Chevrolet Colorado). For 2016, the automaker adds a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine to the options list and updates the infotainment system with smartphone-projection technology.
  
  The 2016 GMC Canyon receives an initial quality Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

• 2016 GMC Sierra 1500

  Given that it shares its structure and powertrains with the Chevrolet Silverado, it’s not surprising that the GMC Sierra 1500 (LD) gets many of the same changes for 2016. Styling is mildly updated, new infotainment systems debut, new driver-assistance technologies are available, and the Sierra is offered with several new special-edition appearance packages. An 8-speed automatic transmission is available for the SLT trim level.
  
  The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 receives an initial quality Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

• 2016 Nissan Frontier

  The current Nissan Frontier debuted way back in 2005. In other words, it is a very old design, and Nissan has had more than a decade to sort things out, which might explain its achievement in the Midsize Pickup segment in the latest Initial Quality Study. Changes for 2016? Heck no! New colors are offered, and you can get a power sunroof on the SV crew cab version.
  
  The 2016 Nissan Frontier receives an initial quality Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5 and is the award recipient in the Midsize Pickup segment.
