Fans of the Toyota 86 (née Scion FR-S) and Subaru BRZ have been clamoring for more power from the twins’ common 205-hp 2.0-liter flat-four almost since these boy racers first put rubber to road in 2012. And while a 5-hp bump in 2017 may not have totally mollified those enthusiasts, Toyota’s new limited-run TRD special edition might satisfy buyers who are more concerned about handling performance than straight-line speed.

The 86 TRD will go on sale in August for $32,420. That price places it firmly at the top of the 86’s lineup, which is also includes the base 86 and the cushier GT trim. For that extra money, buyers will enjoy upgrades including Brembo brakes, Sachs performance dampers, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires mounted on 18-inch wheels. The Brembos and Sachs dampers are already available to BRZ buyers, but they’re new to the 86. The TRD edition comes with the 86’s normal powertrain choices, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder mated with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

There are also, of course, several cosmetic tweaks unique to the TRD edition (whether they are improvements will depend on your taste). A body kit alters the front and rear bumpers and side sills, while a set of colorful graphics along each door differentiates this model from more run-of-the-mill 86s. Every TRD will be painted black and features a black interior with bright red accents and stitching.

Toyota will only build 1418 examples of this 86. We look forward to reporting soon on driving this newest member of the TRD family.
