There's some big GR86 news coming from Toyota today. The company has revealed a limited-run special edition version of its two-door sports car, along with a race-only version called the GR86 Cup.

The new road-going trim, simply called the Special Edition, is new for the 2023 model year. Based on the Premium trim, it comes exclusively in Solar Shift orange paint with black graphics on the C-pillar, a black duckbill spoiler, and specific 18-inch matte black alloy wheels. There's also a GR cat-back exhaust system with black chrome tips.

Mechanically, the GR86 Special Edition is identical to the normal GR86 Premium. That means a 228-hp flat-four sending torque to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, along with a limited-slip differential. Those alloy wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, and backed up by disc brakes all around. Production for the Special Edition is limited to just 860 units. Expect deliveries to begin later this year.

In other news, Toyota has launched a new one-make racing series called the GR Cup. Sanctioned by SRO America, it will allow for semi-low-cost racing for enthusiasts who want to break into the scene. There will be 14 events over seven different circuits across the United States starting in 2023. Think of it as a direct competitor to Mazda's MX-5 Cup.

Drivers will be piloting what Toyota calls the GR86 Cup. It's a stock GR86 that's sent to a new TRD facility in Mooresville, North Carolina to be transformed for track-only use, equipped with a new ECU, a new Borla exhaust, a Sadev six-speed sequential, Alcon brakes, JRI adjustable shocks, new bodywork, aerodynamic upgrades, safety additions, and more.

Pricing for the GR86 Cup and an official schedule for the championship will be announced this summer.
