Toyota has announced a recall of 2016-to-2018-model Prius hybrids for an elevated risk of engine fires. The defect involves the engine wire harness, which can rub against the Power Control Unit, eventually causing an electrical short circuit that could potentially lead to an engine fire.

Toyota says it knows of no injuries related to this issue. Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by Toyota beginning later this month. Dealers will inspect the harnesses, and those that are found to be damaged will be replaced with a new one that includes a protective sleeve; harnesses that show no evidence of degradation will have protective tape added to the wire-harness assembly. Repairs will be performed at no charge.

The recall covers only the regular Prius model, not the Prius Prime or the Prius C. Approximately 192,000 cars in the United States are affected. The 2016 and 2017 Prius previously was subject to a recall and a stop-sale back in late 2016 due to parking brakes that could fail to engage.
