  • Hoonigan and Subaru teamed up to make this 862-hp 1983 Subaru GL.

  • Travis Pastrana will drive it up the hill at Goodwood next week.

  • It will also star in a Hoonigan Gymkhana film.

Travis Pastrana has yet to run out of outrageous vehicles to drive, ride, or fly off of crazy jumps. He’s had success in everything from X Games to rallycross to motocross and even a few runs in various NASCAR series. So we shouldn’t be too surprised when we see the car he’ll be driving up the hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next week: a 1983 Subaru GL wagon.

Wait, that’s not outrageous, you say? Well, it’s not just any old junkyard-find 1983 Subaru GL. This one is a cooperative project between Hoonigan and Subaru Motorsports USA. The team managed to coax 862 hp out of the turbocharged flat four boxer, then route it through a six-speed sequential gearbox and from there to all four wheels. It rides on a long-travel WRC-spec suspension and will use tweaks found in Pastrana’s record-setting run at the Mt. Washington Hill Climb last year.

But the coolest thing may be the electro-pneumatic rear wing and front and rear aero flaps that deploy as needed on speed runs. Another aero tune is the roof rack that routes airflow to the rear-mounted radiator via a NACA duct in the roof.

The basic chassis is not early ‘80s Subaru but rather a tube frame wrapped in carbon-fiber body panels. Only the radio is from the ’83 GL, while the gauges are made to look retro-80s.

The whole thing has been dubbed The Family Huckster.

“The GL wagon is an iconic Subaru that I thought would be pretty rad to see flying through the air,” said Pastrana. “Surprisingly, the Family Huckster is a lot smaller than the Airslayer. Combine that with the boxy shape and you have a perfect recipe for next-level precision driving. An active rear wing is helpful to an extent, but the ‘83 wagon flies about as well as you would imagine…kind of like a brick. This makes the jumps way more sketchy but also more entertaining and less predictable. The Family Huckster is without a doubt my all-time favorite vehicle to drive. Can’t wait to show the world at Goodwood and later this year in the next Gymkhana.”

Pastrana will drive The Family Huckster for Subaru Motorsports USA at Goodwood in the Hillclimb Shootout, where he took second place last year driving the 2020 Airslayer STI, another Subaru-based creation.

Look for The Family Huckster to star in Hoonigan’s next Gymkhana movie.
