A while back, we brought you a slice of the Traditional Coachworks–built Cadillac Mirage’s history. At the time, we mentioned that it wasn’t the only Cadamino on the block in the 1970s. The Mirage’s most notable rival for the hearts and minds of the luxury truck/car faithful came courtesy of the Caribou.

The de Ville–based Caribou was the brainchild of a San Francisco Bay Area company initially known as American Built Cars, which changed its name to Caribou after the relative success of their Cadillac truck/car. To us, the Mirage really seems like the one to have, its roofline more elegant than that of the Caribou. But the model we recently featured sold for 48 large. What’s a man to do if he’s only got $38K to spend on a ’70s Cadillac pickup?

Glad you asked, friend, as there’s a Caribou for sale right this minute on Craigslist in Finleyville, Pennsylvania, just south of Pittsburgh. Info from the seller is light, but the ad claims the car has covered just 37,000 miles and features a “very clean” 500-cubic-inch V-8. Power windows, power locks, and A/C are part of the package as well. Regrettably for California buyers, it’s a 1976 model, so it’s subject to smog testing. But with all the low-speed profiling you’re gonna do in your sweet, sweet Caribou, is a smog-choked 500 V-8 really a problem?

“The Spirit of ’76” is C/D’s Fourth of July holiday-weekend series highlighting some of the most awesome cars for sale from our nation’s bicentennial year.
