The Turbocharged Genesis G80 Sport Promises It'll Be More Fun to Drive

From Road & Track

The Genesis G80 (no longer the Hyundai Genesis sedan) might not come with the prestige of a BMW 5 Series or a Mercedes E-Class, but it offers a huge amount of value for your money. For several thousand dollars less than its German competition, the G80 is an incredibly comfortable, quiet luxury sedan. And with the new G80 3.3T Sport, Genesis hopes to inject some fun into its midsize entry.

The biggest change comes under the hood where you'll find a new 3.3-liter turbocharged V6. The engine's good for 365 horsepower and 376 lb.-ft. of torque. That's a healthy bump up from the naturally aspirated V6's 311 horses. And thanks to the turbocharger, that torque is available from 1500 RPM.

Considering that the base engine isn't known for its low-end torque, that'll be a welcome improvement. Genesis hasn't released acceleration figures yet, but paired with a sportier transmission tune, we expect the G80 Sport will be a few ticks quicker to 60 mph than its naturally aspirated counterpart.

Genesis says it's also upgraded both the suspension and the brakes, tuning the dampers to provide sportier handling. You also get an appearance package that actually looks pretty good, as well as new leather sports seats.

In its current form, the G80 is plenty comfortable but not particularly fun to drive. Pricing has yet to be released, but the 3.3T Sport at least seems to be a step in the right direction
