U.S. supports transfer of German Leopard-2 tanks to Ukraine, says Bundestag’s defense committee

“This was confirmed to me during my visit to Washington in all my discussions with the State Department, Congress and the Senate,” she wrote.

She emphasized that the U.S. expects Germany to fulfill these obligations.

“We should not leave Ukraine,” she said.

“They need the tanks.”

German newspaper Welt reported on Sept. 6 that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had reportedly refused to transfer Leopard-2 tanks, citing the needs of Germany’s own military. Commenting on this, Scholz said that his country provides “sufficient” help to Ukraine, and decisions to transfer equipment are made in coordination with allies.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock said on Oct. 16 that currently air defense systems are a priority for Ukraine. She called tanks a “secondary issue.”
