The Ultimate Air-Cooled Porsche 911 Is Going Up for Sale at Monterey

From Road & Track

The 993 is considered by some to be the best iteration of the legendary Porsche 911 sports car. The last of the air-cooled Porsches was a blast to drive, with fantastic looks, and it went out with a bang. By bang, I mean the bonkers 993 GT2 Evo.

The 1995 911 GT2 Evo was a hardcore version of the already-crazy 911 GT2. It featured the GT2's twin-turbo 3.6-liter flat six, tuned to a raucous 600 horsepower. Like the regular GT2, the Evo was rear-wheel-drive, had a six-speed manual, and was built to homologate racing cars for the FIA GT1 racing series.

Featuring absurdly wide bolt-on fenders, this GT2 Evo is completely stripped out, leaving nothing but the driver's seat, steering wheel, and roll cage inside the cabin. The unique front splitter and huge rear wing provide so much downforce and grip that you won't even miss the all-wheel-drive from the base Turbo.

The nice folks at Mecum are handling the sale at their auction in August, coinciding with the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. They say that the car is completely unmodified, and has only 4350 miles on the clock. Only 11 GT2 Evos ever left the factory, so seeing one for sale is especially rare.

Mecum doesn't offer an estimate of how high bidding will go on this extremely rare Porsche-which you could take as a sign in itself. If there ever was an air-cooled 911 to buy, this would be it. Don't miss out, get your plane ticket to Monterey now.
