McLaren is going to channel the spirit of the mighty F1 for its upcoming three-seat "hyper GT," the Speedtail. Previously known by just its codename, BP23, McLaren promises this car will exceed the F1's remarkable 243-mph top speed, while like the F1, only 106 will be built. Courtesy of Top Gear, we've got new Speedtail figure to share with you-it will make at least 986 horsepower.

That number comes from McLaren Automotive boss Mike Flewitt, who was speaking at a customer event during Monterey Car Week. He was talking about the flexibility of McLaren's twin-turbo V8, when he let a nice detail on the Speedtail slip.

"That architecture has gone from 426bhp in a [570s] GT4 to I-can’t-tell-you-what-yet in a Speedtail," Flewitt said. "But it’s more than 1,000 PS [986 hp]."

Like the P1, the Speedtail will be a hybrid, but Flewitt told Top Gear that "we’ve got a slightly different hybrid application." We'll have to wait to find out exactly what that entails.

And while exceeding 243 mph would make the Speedtail one of the fastest production cars in the world, Flewitt said McLaren's not interested in chasing 300 mph, like Hennessey and Koenigsegg.

"It has an amazing top speed, but that’s a result of the engineering that’s gone into the car, not a target of the car," he added.

McLaren is positioning this car as a comfortable long-distance cruiser with advanced aerodynamics, light weight, and excellent handling. It'll be more road-oriented than the monstorous Senna, too.

A teaser video McLaren released last month indicates the company will have more Speedtail news to share in October. We'll be watching closely.
