Porsche 911s were never cheap, but from the moment the new ones started to get so big and complicated, everybody wanted the classics, making good value air-cooled cars a thing of the past at a rapid rate. Los Angeles-based Workshop 5001 just entered the scene recently, but with a slightly different approach than most. The three projects completed so far all started with taking a good look at the donor car, not just searching for hidden rust spots, but trying to figure out what sort of upgrades would suit the car best.

Their No1. car is a 1973, powered by a 3.4 liter twin-plug engine, linked to a beefed up gearbox and an aggressive limited-slip differential. It also has three-way adjustable coil overs from KW, ending in steelies and some very skinny tires by current standards. There's also a roll cage, but the most important qualities remain in place: it's a tiny car with perfect steering, lots of noise and the handling balance you crave. No 991 will match that. Not even the R.
