The Dacia Sandero is Europe's cheapest car, far less expensive than anything sold in the United States. And yet, it's not terrible.
Dacia is a Romanian carmaker that now belongs to Renault, and the Sandero rides on the same CMF platform that underpins entry-level Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Renault models.
Dacia sold close to 574,000 cars last year, with slightly over 200,000 of them being versions of the Sandero.
The Dacia Sandero is Europe's cheapest car—but will never be sold in the States. In Germany, the basic 65-hp model costs the equivalent of just $10,330.
Standard equipment is more generous than you might expect. All Sanderos get power door locks with remote, power front windows, six airbags, and LED daytime running lights. But air conditioning is not standard, and the rear windows have cranks.
Two 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engines are offered, a naturally aspirated version with 65 horses and the 90-hp turbocharged version we drove. A "bi-fuel" version that can alternatively develop 99 horsepower when fueled with propane is also offered in certain countries.
The Sandero has a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, with Stepway versions getting a six-speed. A CVT auto is also available.
Dacia's logo—an interlocked D and C—looks very similar to the one used by the DC Shoes brand founded by Ken Block.
