We just drove the new 2023 GMC Canyon, a redesigned version of GM's mid-size pickup truck. Like its sibling, the Chevy Colorado, the Canyon is much improved and now offers an equivalent trim level to Chevy's ZR2 model. The GMC off-road model is called AT4X.
The Canyon's AT4X trim level is the most off-road-ready version of the mid-size truck.
Like the Colorado ZR2, it has Multimatic spool-valve dampers, skid plates and other off-road upgrades.
The truck pictured here has the Edition 1 package, which adds a few aesthetic upgrades for a steep price.
Costing over $66,000 fully loaded, the AT4X Edition 1 may not be the most value-oriented version, but it does grant you exclusivity.
Every Canyon comes standard with a turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-four engine.
The Canyon has the high-output tune across the board, with all versions offering 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.
This is a notable change from the Colorado. Most versions of the Chevy charge extra for the high-output engine, but they also don't charge as much for the truck.
The Canyon also offers Elevation, AT4, and Denali trim levels.
4x4 enthusiasts will no doubt agree that the AT4X looks best muddy.
All versions of the Canyon, even the base Elevation pictured here, have the wider front and rear track reserved for the Colorado's Trail Boss and ZR2 off-road trim levels.
