Volvo is now offering a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive powertrain option for the C40 Recharge (as well as for the XC40 Recharge).
The C40 is the slope-roofed counterpart to the XC40 compact SUV, but unlike the XC40, the C40 is sold only as an EV.
The single motor is a new 248-hp unit that Volvo engineered itself and will build in Sweden. It drives the rear wheels.
Volvo is targeting an EPA range of 297 miles for the single-motor C40 and 293 miles for the slightly blockier XC40 variant.
The rear-drive Recharge gets a slightly larger new 79.0-kWh battery—the AWD sticks with the previous 75.0-kWh unit. The bigger battery is capable of supporting DC fast-charging at rates of up to 200 kilowatts versus 150 kilowatts for the smaller pack.
The C40’s sleeker roofline comes at the expense of both rear-seat headroom and rear visibility, which is heavily compromised when compared to the XC40.
Pricing for the single-motor C40 has not been announced but will be a few thousand dollars lower than the dual-motor version.
Sales start in the second half of this year.
