Volkswagen Is Building A Battery Factory In Germany
While announcing the company's biggest undertaking yet, the 2017 Golf and the product offensive that follows it, VW boss Matthias Mueller also revealed that the company will build a new battery factory in Salzgitter, Germany.
This is hardly surprising news given that Daimler is also in the process of building its second battery plant close to home to support Mercedes' massive electric ambitions. Meanwhile, Elon Musk announced just yesterday that he wants Tesla to have at least two factories in Europe, capable of both vehicle- and battery production.
Regarding diesel technology, VW passenger car chief Herbert Diess said "diesel technology remains an important pillar in reducing CO2 emissions and achieving climate goals." He ensured the Golf-hungry crowd that "Volkswagen's Euro 6 diesels are cleaner than most from rival manufacturers," but he also stressed that the new Golf "always stands for a new beginning and new momentum."
Let's just wait and see how this electrifying momentum plays out for them.
