No, we don't get the Volkswagen Up! in the USA. No, you probably don't care that we don't get VW's funky compact here. Well, you're about to.
This is the Up! GTI and it is essentially the return of the original hot hatch. That means we have a lightweight hatch with a 113 hp turbo three-cylinder engine, a revised suspension, more downforce (because it definitely needs downforce?), and a price that would be around $20,000 if it were for sale in the USA.
Which it isn't.
So why is this something we're excited about? We're fans of hot hatches, but many have become too big and too heavy in the last few years. Now most are bulbous bulk machines that aren't the playful lightweights that they once were. But the Fiesta ST reminded us of the joy of a lighter, simpler hot hatch. Even though it wasn't quite as "hot," it was more fun to hustle something lighter and less powerful than something huge and fast.
The Up! GTI is like a Fiesta ST, but less power and less weight. This is a good thing that we are totally behind.
