Volkswagen Is Planning a New Subcompact SUV for America, but It's Not the T-Cross or T-Roc

Volkswagen's SUV offensive isn't over yet: in addition to the Atlas and the Tiguan, VW will add another, smaller crossover to its lineup. But this new model coming to the United States won't be one of the global small crossovers VW has already launched, as neither the T-Roc nor the recently revealed T-Cross (pictured above) will make it to our shores. Instead, a Volkswagen representative says that we'll get a new subcompact crossover specifically for the American market.

Slotting in below the Tiguan, this new VW will fit into the subcompact-crossover class to compete against the Honda HR-V, the Jeep Renegade, and many others. Our best guess is that it'll use the ubiquitous MQB platform, which underpins nearly Volkswagen's entire lineup at this point, while power will come from a turbocharged four-cylinder paired with either front- or all-wheel drive.

Although the T-Cross and T-Roc could give some indication of what the U.S.-bound VW crossover might look like, neither is properly sized for our market-at least according to VW. The T-Cross, which is based on the Polo, a hatchback smaller than the Golf that VW doesn't sell here, is only 161.8 inches long, making it nearly two feet shorter than the Tiguan and considerably shorter than other cars in the subcompact crossover class here. The T-Roc is sized more similarly to the Golf, but VW apparently thinks that it, too, is not big enough, at 166.7 inches long. For reference, most subcompact crossovers in the U.S. measure between 165 and 170 inches long.

So at the very least, we can expect the unnamed VW subcompact crossover for America to be slightly larger than both those models. There will be a bit more of a wait for this new SUV, as VW says it won't be launching next year. Look for it to arrive sometime in 2020.
