Volkswagen announced Wednesday it will be entering the Baja 1000 desert off-road race in November 2020 using this truck, dubbed the Atlas Cross Sport R. It's a purpose-built off-roader desert race car packing a high-output 2.0-liter inline four, all-wheel drive, and enough suspension travel to tackle any terrain.

The car bears some vague resemblance to the Atlas Cross Sport it was named after, but as you can probably tell, it's a totally different beast underneath. It's a proper class 7 Baja race car, using the same 2.0-liter inline-four from Volkswagen's Polo WRC and Beetle rallycross cars. It's capable of up to 600 horsepower, but will be detuned to around 480 horsepower to conform to regulations.

Tanner Foust, winner of the recently-defunct Americas Rallycross Championship, will help develop the car leading up to the event, and also participate as a driver.
