Last month, Volkswagen confirmed it would be pulling out of the World Rally Championship at the end of the 2016 season. This unexpected news came as a result of the Volkswagen Group's continued effort to cut costs in the wake of its diesel emissions scandal. However, since VW's WRC team has already developed next season's chassis, there's a chance it could still compete-as a customer car.

Autocar spoke to Frank Welsch, the team's head of development, who confirmed the car would be homologated for the 2017 season, despite the program's cancellation in early November. He says the firm has been approached by several private customer teams who are looking to use the car in the upcoming Championship.

"Lots of private teams have been asking to run the car and, while there is no decision on whether we will do that yet, with development 99 percent complete it made sense to complete the final hoops required for homologation so we can if necessary," he said.

"At the moment all I can say people are interested and we are keeping the possibility open."
