Volvo V90 Cross Country Wagon Takes on Elegant Crossovers

Swedish automaker Volvo, now owned by China’s Geely Group, revealed a few details about the new 2017 V90 Cross Country midsize premium wagon that will be added to the V90 Series lineup. The Cross Country, which will deliver all-road performance, safety, and comfort as well as premium amenities, will reach U.S. dealer showrooms in 2017. Production begins later this year at the Torslanda plant in Sweden, according to Volvo officials.

Volvo has been making wagons for 60 years, and the first Cross Country wagon was introduced 20 years ago. The new V90 Cross Country Wagon is built to meet all weather environments and rugged off-road conditions with an extra 8.4 inches of ground clearance in addition to all-wheel drive (AWD), redone exterior bumpers and fascias, and different, sturdier tires.

The sleek and stylish Cross Country is a variant of the new V90 wagon that is based on Volvo’s same Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) as the S90 sedan and the XC90 midsize premium SUV. It is a larger replacement for the V70 wagon, which is called an “Estate” in Europe.

Power for the V90 Cross Country will be provided by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 316 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s possible, according to some news reports, that the Cross Country could also include a variant with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Volvo’s s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive technology system, which the carmaker claims is one of the most advanced standard safety packages and includes large animal detection and run-off-road mitigation, likely will be included in the Cross Country along with smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay. The Cross Country also will feature a high-end audiophile sound system from Bowers & Wilkins.

Pricing for the new Volvo V90 Cross Country has not yet been revealed.
