Yahoo Autos VW's Electric Pikes Peak Prototype Isn't Silent
When I was in Alès to check out Volkswagen's brand new electric Pikes Peak prototype, Porsche factory driver Romain Dumas was supposed to do a few demo laps for us. Then, the program changed, and all we got was the car slowly rolling back to the pits, producing the usual Jetson sound, as well as a weird rubbing noise.
But despite that, the car got out there again once I left, giving Romain the chance to compare the driving experience to his usual Porsche 919, the car VW used to create the I.D. R.
With less then two months to spare until the race, Volkswagen Motorsport is working around the clock to develop the car, currently on its way to finding the perfect tires for it with the help of Michelin. And the first part of this development work will take place at Alès, on the home circuit of VW's French driver.
With this much weight and only 680 horsepower on board, the best the I.D. R can hope for at Pikes Peak is to beat the EV record set by Rhys Millen two years ago. But since the I.D. brand seems to be VW's future, please listen to the sound of said future:
