  • VW ID.4 1st Editions begin arriving stateside with 201-hp output, single-motor RWD layout and a range of 250 miles.

  • With a base price of $41,190 before any federal or local incentives, the ID.4 will compete with the likes of the Chevy Bolt EUV, Hyundai Kona EV, Kia Niro EV, Tesla Model Y, and others.

  • All-wheel-drive versions of the ID.4 will arrive a little later, as will a cheaper base version, and VW is developing other models positioned above and below the ID.4 in size.

This month marks the start of Volkswagen ID.4 deliveries in the United States, as the first examples of Wolfsburg's compact electric SUV arrive at dealers stateside. The long-awaited model is the first in a line of ID-branded electric vehicles that the German automaker will offer here, designed to compete with gas-engined vehicles in versatility, technology, and price.

Lower and slightly shorter in length than the Tiguan, the ID.4 will offer a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive, with the debut RWD model powered by a rear-mounted motor producing 201 hp and 228 lb-ft of torque. With a starting price of $41,190 before any federal or local incentives, the ID.4 will serve up an EPA-estimated range of 250 miles from its usable 77 kWh battery, with AWD versions slated to arrive later in 2021. Other variants, including a lower-priced base model, should land around the $35,000 mark (before incentives) next year.
