Yahoo Autos Watch the 2019 Porsche 911 Smoke Its Tires at the Nuburgring
It's hard to believe, but the current, 991-generation Porsche 911 debuted way back in 2011. That means the 911 is soon due for an upgrade, and wouldn't you know, Porsche's hard at work on just that. The 2019 911 has finally hit Germany's famed Nurburgring, just a week after we saw it cold-weather testing in the snow.
Video of the 2019 911 comes to us from YouTuber Supercarsfromeu, who also brought us spy footage of the 2018 GT3 RS last week. What can we tell about the new 911 from this video? Disappointingly, not much. This prototype looks and sounds like a 911. We can see that this 911 features slightly different hood sculpting than the current model, a larger rear spoiler, and an LED light bar that runs across the rear. It's also smoking the right rear tire quite a bit...
The 2019 911 is rumored to share a platform with the next-generation Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracan, though it'll remain rear-engined. The 911 will probably also get the eight-speed PDK transmission that just debuted in the new Panamera. A plug-in hybrid drivetrain is also under consideration, but Porsche hasn't decided if it'll make production.
Even though the next-generation 911 is under development, Porsche isn't done with the current car. Both the GT3 RS and turbocharged GT2 are on their way, and there should be some sort of special edition from Porsche Exclusive too.
Once again, it's a case of evolution rather than revolution at Porsche, but that shouldn't be a problem. We'll likely see the new 911 officially debut next year.
